Where is Hepatitis B Found?

Although rare in the UK, Hepatitis B can be found in higher risk areas, such as Africa, Asia, the Middle East and parts of south American and Eastern Europe.

Not to be confused with Hepatitis A, which is spread through poor sanitation, or Hepatitis C which is most commonly transmitted through sharing needles, Hep B is an STI (Sexually transmitted infection)

Take a look at the world map below, to view where Hepatitis B is commonly found. It’s important to remember that Hep B is not native to these countries alone and can be found elsewhere.

How can I protect myself from Hepatitis B?

The most effective way to protect yourself against Hepatitis B is through vaccination. The vaccine is given as a course of injections and provides long term protection against infection.

Hepatitis B is spread through blood and bodily fluids, so you can also reduce your risk by avoiding unprotected sexual contact, not sharing needles or personal items such as razors or toothbrushes, and ensuring any medical or cosmetic procedures abroad are carried out using sterile equipment.

What not to do in prevalent countries:

Do not have unprotected
sexual contact

Avoid tattoos, piercings or medical treatment with unsterile equipment

Do not share needles, razors or toothbrushes

Various Types of Hepatitis

There are five different hepatitis viruses: A, B, C, D and E. Hepatitis A is the most contagious/ Hepatitis worldwide due to the virus being highly transmissible.

Hepatitis B, C, D are not transmitted as easily due to their blood borne transmission route, however all forms of Hepatitis can be transmitted through sexual contact or through saliva. Hepatitis E is transmitted through water or food like Hep A but is currently not common worldwide

Additional Information

In the UK, the Hepatitis B vaccine is given to babies as part of the 6-in-1 vaccine.

For those who are at higher risk, including those travelling to a high-risk country, have a liver or kidney disease or have HIV, should also ensure they are fully vaccinated.
