Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection which occurs in the brain transmitted to humans by mosquitoes in parts of Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection which occurs in the brain transmitted to humans by mosquitoes in parts of Asia and the Pacific Rim.
The mosquitoes that transmit JE feed predominantly during the night, between dusk and dawn they are prolific in rural areas, especially where rice cultivation and pig farms are nearby, they are becoming more common in urban areas.
How can I protect myself from Japanese Encephalitis?
The most effective protection against Japanese Encephalitis is vaccination. The vaccine is given as a course of injections and is recommended for travellers visiting rural or agricultural areas in parts of Asia and the Western Pacific, particularly for longer stays.
you can also reduce your risk by:
- Using a high strength insect repellent
- Wearing long sleeves and trousers
- Sleeping in air conditioned or well screened rooms
- Using mosquito nets where necessary
What not to do in prevalent countries:
Avoid rural or farming areas without mosquito protection
Do not share needles, razors or toothbrushes
Avoid sleeping in unscreened accommodation without a mosquito net
Common Symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis
Symptoms can range from mild to more severe and usually develop a few weeks after exposure.
