Where is Typhoid Virus Found?

The majority of global cases of disease occur in Asia, but the disease continues to be a concern in other areas including Africa and parts of Central and South America.

Drinking from bottled water lowers your risk however all food and water in these areas can have some risk of contamination, the infection can also come from contact with infected individuals.

How can I protect myself or others from Typhoid?

The most effective way to protect yourself against typhoid is through vaccination before travel to higher risk areas. The vaccine is available as either an injection or oral capsules and provides short to medium term protection.

Typhoid is usually spread through contaminated food and water, so you can also reduce your risk by practising good hand hygiene, drinking safe bottled or treated water, and avoiding raw or undercooked foods.

Vaccination combined with careful food and water precautions offers the best protection when travelling.

What not to do in Typhoid prevalent countries:

Do not drink untreated tap water

Avoid raw salads and unpeeled fruits

Do not eat undercooked meat or street food in poor sanitation areas

Common Symptoms of Typhoid

Symptoms usually develop one to two weeks after exposure and can become serious without treatment, so medical attention should be sought if typhoid is suspected.

Persistent High Fever

Abdominal pain

Constipation or diarrhoea

Symptoms Explained:

There can be many complications including Intestinal bleeding and perforation. If treated most people will make a full recovery however if untreated death rates can be high.

Antibiotic resistant infections are increasingly common; this can complicate and reduce treatment options. Vaccination is the best option for reducing risk.
