How Does Emergency Contraception Work?
Emergency contraception is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure such as a condom splitting or a missed pill.
It is not the same as an abortion pill and does not end an existing pregnancy. It works by delaying or preventing ovulation so that an egg cannot be fertilised.
There are two options available through the NHS. Levonorgestrel, commonly known as the morning after pill, can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex and is most effective the sooner it is taken. Ulipristal acetate can be taken up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex and is generally considered more effective when taken later in that window.
